Neuromuscular stimulation is achieved by sending small electrical impulses through the skin to the underlying motor units (nerves and muscles) to create an involuntary muscle contraction. This passive exercise is therapeutic treatment to minimize the degeneration that occurs following partial denervation or immobilization.
